DIY Fabric Envelope

I wanted something to put an invitation and some goodies in something that wasn't just a plain envelope.  My mom has a bunch of fabric scraps so I decided to make a fabric envelope!  Pretty simple and I made it without buying any new materials which is always a plus :)

Things you'll need:

ruler, scissors, needle & thread,

 two buttons, glue gun, two different fabrics, 

fabric chalk (or anything that will show up on fabric)

thin ribbon, cord, or thread to tie the envelope

1.  First, I took the fabric I wanted to use for the outside of the envelope and with a ruler and my fabric chalk outlined the envelope.  I used 9" x 12" measurement for the envelope, added 5" to both sides of the envelope for the flaps, 2" to the center bottom, and 4" for the top flap.  It looked something like this 

  

SIDE NOTE: Watch your favorite tv show while you make this!  It's simple so you can definitely multitask.  I watched How I Met Your Mother, my favorite show 

2.  Next, I cut out the outline and placed it on top of my second fabric (the fabric I would be using for the inside of the envelope) and used it to cut out the same dimensions.

3.  In order to make sure the inside fabric isn't hanging out of the edges of the envelope I cut the the edges to make it a little smaller than the outside fabric.

4.  Next I hot glue gunned the edges of the fabrics together.

5.  Fold over the right flap then the left flap over it, glue that together.  Then I glued the bottom center flap on top of that and of course left the top flap alone.

6.  Get your button and sew it on the top flap.  I used the same color thread I would be using to stitch something on the envelope.  

7.  Then sew on the second button! 

8.  Then if you want, you can stitch something onto the front.  I was using the envelope to send an invite to my sorority's semi formal so I stitched on my date's name.
